Accessibility at Sheboyggin
Last updated April 30, 2026
1. What we aim for
We're working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA. We're not there in every corner of the site yet โ we're a small team and the platform is new. The features below are real, today. The list of known gaps below is also real.
2. Built-in accessibility features
- Dyslexia-friendly font. A toggle in the sidebar Jigg Controls switches the body font to one designed for easier reading with dyslexia.
- Adjustable font size. Three sizes: small, default, large. Setting persists across sessions.
- Animation off. If you prefer reduced motion, the Jigg Controls panel has an animations toggle. We also respect the system prefers-reduced-motion setting where possible.
- Focus mode. Hides the background world-view animation for a calmer reading surface.
- Anonymous mode. Hides usernames in feeds when you just want to read what was said, not who said it.
- Light / dark theme. Defaults to your system preference, can be overridden.
- Keyboard navigation. All interactive controls are reachable with Tab. Submit forms with Enter.
3. Where we know we're falling short
We list the gaps openly. If you hit something not on this list, please tell us โ see contact below.
- Some animation effects (the world-view, hover dances on nav tiles) run before checking prefers-reduced-motion in every code path. Use the in-site animation toggle to be sure.
- Color-only state on a few UI elements (active nav indicator, vote counts) โ we're adding text/iconography to back up the colour.
- Image alt text on user-uploaded art posts depends on what creators write โ we don't require it yet. We will.
- Audio broadcasts (the spoken-story feature) don't have synchronized captions yet. The original text is always available next to the audio.
- Screen-reader testing has been informal so far. We're lining up proper testing with NVDA and VoiceOver.
4. Tell us about a barrier
If something on Sheboyggin doesn't work for you โ broken keyboard access, missing alt text, contrast that hurts, anything โ please email accessibility@sheboyggin.com (or hello@sheboyggin.com). We'll respond within 5 business days and tell you whether we can fix it, when, or why not.
5. This page is a living document
Accessibility is never "done." As we add features we add new gaps. We'll update this page when we close known issues and when we discover new ones. Last updated April 30, 2026.
